“Local kid” Shawn knows British Columbia well, but better yet, he knows how to listen for what people want. He delights in finding entertainment that bridges the gap between younger and older audiences. “You can get a beer anywhere but the entertainment makes the difference in your evening.” Shawn has brought in notable entertainment: The Town Pants, Gypsy Jazz Band, Celtic fiddler Shona Le Motte, and Shane Phillips and his didgeridoo are just a few of the stellar acts that packed McKinney’s Pub in its first year.Patrons appreciate Shawn’s choices. “If what’s on this week doesn’t suit me, I know next week the band will be something I like.”
Shawn encourages local initiatives like poetry groups, fashion shows, fundraisers, and the popular salsa nights to find a home at McKinney’s, too. Supporting local artists in music, dance, and spoken word three or four nights of the week parallels the Newport’s philosophy of restoring rather than “modernising” the Old Lady Rodmay. It’s all part of today’s focus on sustainability, making Powell River a good place to enjoy daily life.
What are you waiting for? Join your friends at the end of the day to hoist a glass, swing a leg, or join the jam. Savor the flavor of the best of Powell River.
